Michelin

Incoterms explained in simple terms

Incoterms® 2020 Explained, how they will affect global trade. The International Chamber of Commerce has published new Incoterms® 2020 that have come into effect from the 1st of January 2020.  The ICC originally published Incoterms® in 1936 and have continually made updates to reflect the changes to the Global Trade environment.  It’s important that all parties involved in trade clearly understand the changes and how they apply to global supply chains. Incoterms® play such a vital role in the world of global trade.  Incoterms® 2010 or Incoterms® 2020 may seem complicated, but it’s imperative that buyers and sellers clearly understand how they work and their own obligations along the supply chain.  In this article, we explain the updates made and provide simple explanations, along with an Incoterms® infographic to explain Incoterms® 2020.   What are Incoterms®? Put simply, Incoterms® are the selling terms that the buyer and seller of goods both agree to during international transactions.  These rules are accepted by governments and legal authorities around the world. Understanding Incoterms® is a vital part of International Trade because they clearly state which tasks, costs and risks are associated with the buyer and the seller. The Incoterm® states when the seller’s costs and risks are transferred onto the buyer.  It’s also important to understand that not all rules apply in all cases.  Some encompass different types (or modes) of transportation.  Transport by all modes of transport (road, rail, air, and sea) covers FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU (replaces now obsolete DAT) and DDP.  Sea/Inland waterway transport (Sea) covers FAS, FOB, CFR, and CIF, which we explain below.   Why are Incoterms important in International Trade?   Incoterms are referred to as International Commercial Terms.  They are a set of rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which relate to International Commercial Law.  According to the ICC, Incoterms® rules […]

In documentary collections where the exporter (seller) draws a draft on the purchaser, the purchaser does not become legally liable to make payment until he receives the draft and accepts it. Then, at the maturity date of the draft, the drawee should pay. However, if the drawee fails to pay, there is no bank guarantee of payment even if the presentation of the draft was made to the purchaser through banking channels. Acceptor, Accepter Acceptor, Accepter: A drawee who has accepted a draft. Obviously, the acceptor is the correct word, and accepter is either a misspelling or mistake. LME London Metal Exchange — what is it and how does it make money? Secrets Revealed. LME London Metal Exchange — what is it and how does it make money? Secrets Revealed. A Somewhat Longish Introduction Those of you who had the misfortune of frequenting online B2B platforms and who had dealt with wannabe sellers of copper or aluminum, especially from the former Soviet Union, but also from South America and even the People’s Republic of China, frequently hear bizarre statements running along these lines: Our price is the same as the one on the exchange (they mean the London Metal Exchange) or we offer a discount off the listed exchange price. Sometimes they don’t even reference London Metal Exchange, and say our prices are just like “on the exchange” or we “offer a discount off the exchange price” Let’s clarify some matters. Their principal misunderstanding is that the London Metal Exchange is a newspaper-like index of prices. I may later tell you a hilarious though alas a typical story of how middle-level Soviet industrial nomenklatura tried to steal, and no doubt eventually succeeded in stealing, assets of a state-owned company, robbed and dispossessed workers while, in front of outsiders, manipulating with imaginary foreign indexes. The story was sad though typical. Misunderstandings about the London Metal Exchange are a trait of these sellers-wannabes. It is however not the case with bonafide exporters of copper or aluminum because the latter know well what they are doing. Also if you encounter a would-be exporter who is not fluent in English, then just keep going. Not because English is a better language than Farsi or Greek but because the international metal trade is conducted in English, even though all educated folks can converse in French. In my experience, major Russian mining companies have […]

US Bank For Sale in Puerto Rico (IBE not IFE) Commercial Banks, Savings Banks – United States – $25,000,000 USD   A very rare opportunity is available in the US territory of Puerto Rico. A fully operational international bank, with FedWire, is up for sale. The cost is approximately $25 million USD. What makes this a unique opportunity is that this bank holds an International Banking Entity (IBE) license. The law changed in 2015 and IBEs became International Financial Entities (IFE). The major difference between the licenses is that an IBE is eligible to open a branch in the United States where and IFE is not. This is especially important for international investors who would not otherwise be able to purchase a US banking charter. For example, they are unable to comply with the bank holding company rules, etc. This IBE has about 3,500 accounts and $70 million in deposits. They provide correspondent services for a number of IFEs on the island. They also have a FedWire account. Like an IFE, an IBE has a 4% tax rate. There are 29 IBEs licensed in Puerto Rico. You will find that most IBEs are much larger than most IFEs. Licensees include Banco Popular, Citi, Scotiabank, UBS, etc. If you are a qualified buyer of this bank, the seller will be happy to discuss the opportunity with you. Please, no brokers! A qualified buyer is someone that provides proof of funds for $25 million or a similar amount. Proof of funds is a letter from a well-known bank or brokerage firm. Please do not send a corporate bond, Bank Guarantee, SBLC, etc. If you are a qualified buyer, but unable to provide proof of funds, we will ask for a retainer. First Russian Steamboat or the history of steamships in Russia The first steamboat in Russia was built at the Charles Byrd factory in 1815. It operated between St. Petersburg and Kronstadt (or rather Cronstadt). Now, a little history. A few predecessors. The first steamboat in the world was built in France. It was the Pyroscaphe. The boat powered by a Newcomen steam engine. Marquis Claude de Jouffroy and his friends built the Pyroscaphe in 1783 At its first demonstration on 15 July 1783, Pyroscaphe traveled up the river Saône for about fifteen minutes and then the engine failed. Next steamers were built in North America (in Philadelphia) and in Scotland. Russia is the fourth country in the world, after France, Great Britain and the US, that began making its own steamships Meet Charles Byrd. Charles (Karl Nikolaevich) Byrd (1766-1843) , a Russian engineer and businessman of Scottish descent, the first builder of steamships on the Neva. And the creator of the First Steamboat in Russia. Karl Nikolaevich was born in Scotland and as a young man came to Russia in 1786. He was an energetic engineer with a passion for new things. In 1792 he managed to set up a plant in St. Petersburg. That factory eventually became a major iron foundry as well as a mechanical engineering company. Byrd’s Factory made furnaces for sugar refineries, crankshafts, blades, and steam engines. The Byrd’s factory constructed its own shipyard and that produced he first steamer in Russia. Over time, the plant became part of the Admiralty Shipyards. Byrd received the privilege to build steamships with great difficulty and it exists today. In those years – this is the late Napoleonic wars and Congress of Vienna era, steamers were called in the English manner “steamboat” or “pyroscaphe”. So the first Russian pyroscaphe”Elizabeth” (or Elizaveta) was built in 1815 at […]

Brick manufacturing and Brick Making in the 18th century Russia. Procurement of building materials is the most important task facing the organizer of stone construction work. The list of basic materials included: brick, lime, white stone, quarry, tiles, sand, clay, garter and circle wood, oak ties, beds, and “iron supplies.” We would probably now refer to “iron supplies” as hardware. In the XVI-XVII centuries, all the building materials were prepared at the site well in advance. And it was done before the commencement of construction work. There was no “just in time” concept. At the beginning of the 18th century, there were no logistics companies and no trucks to haul bricks. Private construction was generally unregulated. Government interference was also nonexistent. And, as a rule, purchases and production of bricks, lime, and other materials took place both before the start of the work. If something was lacking, then they bought additional supplies along the way but usually, everything was planned for and paid for in advance. Scheduling of Deliveries. The procedure for providing the so-called “goods” and “supplies” to the buildings under construction did not have a specific standard. Bricks and lime were more often made near the construction site itself. In the course of construction work on private orders, building materials could be provided by both the customer and the contractor. But in exceptional cases, masons who received a contract were also engaged in some purchasing. However, as a norm, materials, and work were paid for separately. Contractors and subcontractors of the corresponding profile were involved through an agreement to organize a temporary brick factory or build a ” furnace or kiln on site. Brick Manufacturing as a Niche. Brick production is a special branch of the construction business. And under the conditions of a patrimonial economy in a […]

A history of cast and pig iron production in the Russian context. Export of pig iron and cast iron. If you need actual pig iron or cast iron from Russia, then go to the Dealing Monster and post your requirements there. Someone called pig iron “bread of the industry”. Obviously, pre-steel manufacturing of pretty-much anything depended on iron. Before Peter I Russia was an importer of pig iron. But thanks to the reforms of Peter I, Russia came out on top in the world in its smelting. For a while, in the early 18th century, it became the world’s top producer. Developments During the 18th Century. Holding on. In the 18th century, the success of iron production in Russia is expressed in the following numbers: in 1718 6.641.000 poods had been made. A pood equals 16 kilograms. Roughly. It equals 40 old Russian pounds or 36.11 English pounds (16.38 kilograms). It is an old measurement unit in use from the 1400s or earlier until the Bolshevik forced the conversion to the modern metric system in the 1920s. So, if in in 1718 6.641.000 poods were manufactured, in 1767 it 9,622,000 poods, in 1800 – 10,300,000 poods. Import from abroad of iron, which was previously delivered mainly through Archangel, also spelled from Arkhangelsk from Sweden (lead iron), by 1724 had already displaced by local production. Mind you the import of iron from Sweden was out of the question at the time of the Great Northern War with Sweden. Thatäs why they have to rev up the local production. And Peter succeeded at that. An Export Success… for A While Later there were even attempts to export iron to England: in 1749, 597,000 poods were exported to England. By the end of the 18th century, exports reached 2,581,000 poods. An incredibly high figure that […]

continued History of Exchanges and Bourses in Russia. Compared to other exchanges – either in Western Europe, in Paris and London, or in New York across the Atlantic, or in St. Petersburg, the small exchanges had no strict regulations for their listings. Additionally, due to the fact that the Russian merchants were a fragmented group, the exchanges assumed the function of representing their interests. And that was directly indicated in many exchange charters. Not a single Western European stock exchange performed this function. This was Because the interests of the merchants in France, the Netherlands, or Britain were represented through their chambers of commerce. But there is a disclaimer. Because that applies to smallish merchants. Chambers of Commerce in their most primitive form date from 1721. That’s the rein of Catherine I. And by 1910 there was a number of Chambers of Commerce, although they were narrow in specialization and oriented toward major merchants and companies in big cities. Chambers of Commerce For example, amon them were the Russian Chamber of Industry, the Chamber of Commerce at the Russian Embassy in Paris, Russia Export Chamber of Commerce, Russo-American Chamber of Trade, Russo-British Chamber of Commerce. Finally, the attitude towards exchanges in Russia has always been ambiguous. Among the ordinary people, the opinion often prevailed that a decent person had nothing to do there. I guess to a degree it still remains the case. The Dawn of Sheepish Regulations. In 1893. The Ministry of Finance has imposed a number of restrictions on exchange transactions without brokers. The Ministry of Finance also audited the brokers’ books. In 1895, a Regulation was introduced on the need to obtain permission from the Ministry of Finance for admission of traded goods to quotation on the exchange. In 1911, according to the Ministry of Trade and […]

Bourses and Exchanges in Russia (part 2)

continued from Bourses and Exchanges: Russia’s third bourse, in Warsaw, was chartered in 1816. A small mercantile exchange was incorporated in the town of Kremenchug in a central part of Little Russia (Malorossia) in 1834 while Moscow’s exchange was a relative latecomer (still ahead of Zurich though). It appeared in 1837. Until the 1880s new exchanges were chartered in four other Russian cities – in Rybinsk (1842), Nizhni Novgorod or Lower Novgorod (1848), and then in Kiev (lately for some reason also misspelled as Kyiv), Kharkov, Riga, and Saratov. One Exchange Dominates Nonetheless, St. Petersburg Bourse (Санкт-Петербургская биржа, la Bourse de Saint-Pétersbourg) remained dominant. It had mercantile and stock exchange sections and by 1910 became the world’s fifth-largest by capitalization. Behind the stock exchanges in London, Paris, New York, and Berlin, but ahead of everything else – from Tokyo to Zurich. Specialization of Regional Exchanges The rapid transition to cash crop marketing and industrialization after the reform of 1861 gave impetus to the emergence of mercantile exchanges in many cities of the Russian Empire. The developed agricultural economy and trade in Russian grain led to the creation of grain exchanges which were still minor compared to the big chartered exchanges. In the 1890s numerous commercial banks emerge and the institution of industrial and export credit proliferates and that leads to even more exchanges. At the eve of the Great War. And, by the beginning of the First World war, the total number of bourses and exchanges reached 115, and, incredibly enough the figure outstrips the rest of Europe. Exchanges and bourses also played a far greater role in Russia than anywhere else in the world except perhaps for Britain, the United States, and France, Germany, and, possibly the Netherlands. I assume that chartering a new exchange was much easier in […]

Exchanges and Bourses, a History. Exchanges and bourses in Russia have a long history. St. Petersburg exchange is no longer extant as the Bolsheviks had abolished the old exchange and so its continuity can be questioned. But that equally applies to most of Europe’s exchanges. Don’t believe Wikipedia lies (the worthless and externally manipulated source of misinformation). Actually, Wikipedia is not a good source for any information except for some straightforward data like basic chemical formulas but even then you shouldn’t trust them. Russia’s first exchange or the bourse dates from the year 1703. And it comes into the second tier of exchanges. Ahead of Spain and historical Central European monarchies, and of course far ahead of Eastern European ethno-startups, but far behind the Atlantic fringe: Hamburg- 1558, London Exchange – 1572, Amsterdam – 1602. It was slightly younger than Berlin – the Berliner Bourse was founded in 1685 but surprisingly ahead of Paris, where la Bourse de Paris was founded on the orders of Louis XV in 1724 or the imperial Bourse in Vienna, founded also by imperial order, in 1771. The Exchange Building St,. Petersburg Exchange was modeled after the Amsterdam bourse. However, St. Petersburg was not Amsterdam in the 1700s, and the exchange languished until the end of the century. First, it was located in a specially built structure near St. Petersburg’s Trinity Square on St. Basil’s Island (Vassilievski ostrov) but at the end of the 18th century it relocated to a new magnificent structure. Designed by Thomas de Thomon, this was a Grecian temple of vast proportions, fit to house the statue of Zeus, one of the world’s wonders, a building that remains overpowering, mysterious, and dazzling. The St. Petersburg’s Exchange deserves a separate entry that may as well come. Here is a design plan for […]

World pollock prices

Posted on 12.02.202112.02.2021 by fledermausi Posted in Без рубрики2 Comments on World pollock prices

World pollock prices collapse due to (again!) erratic behavior of the Chinese. On the hand, after 200 or so years China is now a superpower, and it can afford to behave erratically. Whether pollock can afford it or not. is a different question. Altogether. The world has been suffering from over fishing. But since this is a commerce page, and not an eCommerce page, the collapse in the price of pollock may present a business opportunity. For those you may check out the Dealing Monster board. It is simple, nothing excessive and allows you just to post ads. Also about business opportunities. What is pollock? It’s walleye in America. And, according to the still venerable Britannica, pllock that is also spelled pollack, (Pollachius, or Gadus, virens), North Atlantic fish of the cod family, Gadidae. In Europe, it is known as saithe, or coalfish, in Europe. The pollock is an elongated fish, deep green with a pale lateral line and a pale belly. It has a small chin barbel and, like the cod, has three dorsal and two anal fins. A carnivorous, lively, usually schooling fish, it grows to about 1.1 m (3.5 feet) in length and 16 kg (35 pounds) in weight. It is caught commercially for food and also affords sport for anglers. A Relative of Cod. Yes, you got it, walleye is a relative of cod. And though until recently it’s been a somewhat despised fish – despised in otherwise meat-eating modern Russia and frowned about everywhere else — perhaps not too severely frowned upon in Asia, very much so in continental Europe, pollock is surprisingly good for cooking. Pollock is all right. It’s even all right in fish and chip “applications,” as it can be fried in batter pretty much like now expensive cod or haddock. The latter is cheaper but has a better reputation. […]

River Perch

Posted on 09.02.202109.02.2021 by fledermausi Posted in Без рубрики1 Comment on River Perch

We had quite a few indirect inquiries to buy river perch from Russia. The perch in question is sweetwater Eurasian perch, also known as European perch or perca fluviatilis. The perch is for export and clients want to buy perch filets of a specific grade. And demand is high. What’s the Problem? But the problem with all this is that perch is harvested on a small scale. So, you can neither get huge tonnage nor induce big fish grade of investors to swim in these murky waters. Bigger fish, and, we mean bigger fish business-wise not from the standpoint of marine biology — prefers large-scale aquacultural projects. Industrial salmon farming would be a good example. They raise salmon pretty much as if they were hogs. The approach is similar if not identical. Wild Fish. And clients – all of whom are in “Old” Europe though we guess that Japan and even North-America can be interesting markets for freshly processed frozen filets of European perch, caught in pristine rivers of Northern Russia and Siberia, so clients don’t want farmed fish. So, what do we have here? A niche market with an exceptionally high return on investment. Not just some potentially high return on investment but high return right now. You come, you buy fish, you process it, and you’d earn money. We can’t tell you how much but a lot. OK. Forget oil and natural gas. Look at the return from pharmaceuticals but without all the approval wait. And the catch? Talking of the fish, the catch here is that the catch is small. It is a boutique opportunity. But It’s exciting. With an investment of about 3 million euros or its equivalent in roubles, less if you want to move in and work on this on your own, you’d be […]

What is a trade lead?

Posted on 08.02.202108.02.2021 by fledermausi Posted in Без рубрики1 Comment on What is a trade lead?

What is a trade lead? What are trade leads? A few people asked me what is a trade lead. Informal English is good or maybe the more appropriate word here would be “notorious” for and at using verbs as nouns, nouns as verbs, verbs as adjectives, and so on. So, it comes as no surprise that the confusing term trade lead is, well… confusing to many non-native speakers. Unless they are Chinese as the latter seem to generate most trade leads nowadays. The fact that this site is bilingual – and I might make even be foolhardy enough the third language – makes this even more challenging. So difficult in fact, that the two versions do not coincide. The Russian one lives its’ own separate life in splendid isolation while the English one pretends that the other party does not really exist. In the real world, it may be the other way around. The Usual Mismatch So, a trade lead is a combination of two words in which the trade usurped the role of an adjective. Instead of being purely “commercial”, it became usurpatory. Quite like the deplorable though frequent situation when the word moon pretends to act as an adjective and so unceremoniously pushes over the proper adjective — “lunar“, off the moon. No big deal here – after all the word trade likes trading as an adjective. Just think of the ubiquitous combos “trademark” or “trade finance.” Who Leads Whom? And where? That is the question. And it is as weighty a question as the much overrated To Be or Not To Be. Since this blog is supposedly a bilingual one (though, remember the Russian part leads a life of splendid isolation, seemingly unaware of the existence of the other party, and see how that pesky verb “to […]

Buy Cathode Copper – a trade lead

Posted on 07.02.202117.06.2021 by fledermausi Posted in Без рубрики1 Comment on Buy Cathode Copper – a trade lead

Buy cathode copper. We have a client looking for cathode copper or copper cathodes from the Russian Federation or, under some circumstances, Kazakhstan. The material must be offered at FOB terms. The preferred location is FOB Novorossiisk (Novorossiysk, Novorossijsk) or FOB St. Petersburg. The Background. Buy Cathode Copper- This story has not been an easy one and we might have begun to lose the plot. We have three separate industrial clients wishing to buy copper cathode from Russia. Well, under certain circumstances they would consider buying cathode copper from Kazakhstan. But provided the stuff is genuine and the source is verifiable. And that’s rarely the case. Obviously, here in Russia or pretty much elsewhere in the former Soviet Union we can quickly verify if an offer is genuine or not. Additional Sources? Buy Cathode Copper. But the buyers are open-minded and patient. They just want to buy cathode copper. Or copper wire or copper cathodes. If you’ve got cathode copper, they’d consider it. More than that, they’d buy from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, other reputable South American sources, and South Africa. But there is a catch. They only want to buy from an actual copper processor or smelter. And that’s became something of a stumbling block. Bogus Suppliers That has become something of a problem. For a while, we’ve drowned in offers to supply cathode copper or copper cathodes. Offers from obviously clueless individuals who claimed to have secured a supply of copper cathodes from Uzbekistan (if an equivalent of a bribe is to be paid upfront), the Democratic Republic of Congo (no travel necessary), and similar sources. There were also quite a few would-be suppliers of cathode copper from China. But these purveyors, most of whom seem to dwell in Alibaba’s cave, pledge to supply cathode copper at […]

A free (so far) trade board for free trade

Posted on 14.01.202116.01.2021 by fledermausi Posted in Everything1 Comment on A free (so far) trade board for free trade

The problem with those trade boards  is that most of them or all of them charge subscription fees for access. Even the BBS sites. They want money upfront while promising some results in undefined future. Since there are quite many of them, some with extremely complicated layout and organization, subscribing to all of them is either impractical or impossible. The few major classifieds B2B sites of that nature are dominated by users from a certain country, but we won’t name names. Free trade leads B2B classifieds? Are they real? Dealing Monster – is an alternative platform, whether it will charge money down the road is an open question. But it is a startup opportunity to either get a free subscription or just start posting your free B2B leads right away. B2B is a vague term though. Many of those sites are platforms for trade leads, not conventional B2B portals. Even when they mislabel themselves as such. B2B ecommerce, also known as business-to-business electronic commerce, refers to online order transactions between businesses. With trade leads sites those transactions rarely happen online – at least not on that very website. People obtain trade leads, pay for them and do their business offline. Trade leads are often like ordinary classified ads.  So what, free trade leads B2B classifieds. With a conventional B2B platform customer orders are processed digitally. Supposedly buying efficiency is improved for dealers, agents, wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors and other types of B2B marketplace participants. That’s how the theory goes. The practice is that large corporations rarely deal on trade leads boards. These are online environments where secondary deal makers and dealers connect. That’s why the Dealing Monster seems such a good idea. Hopping on board now makes sense, because as long as those trade leads remain free, the website itself will […]
